Trials of Mana's Greatest Weakness: A Charming Story That Never Hits Deep

Image
Support me at BuyMeACoffee (link below) RPG Odyssey        I’ve written about the things I really enjoyed in Trials of Mana — especially its phenomenal soundtrack, enjoyable gameplay, and flexible party-building system. But no RPG is perfect, and as someone who values strong character-driven stories in games like Final Fantasy VII , Tales of Arise , and Genshin Impact , I eventually had to ask myself: What’s holding this game back from greatness? After sitting with the question for a while, I’ve come to a clear conclusion: Trials of Mana's greatest weakness is its narrative simplicity and emotional shallowness. The Story is Serviceable — But Safe      The core plot of Trials of Mana is straightforward and easy to follow: each character has a personal mission, and their paths converge in a world-saving adventure. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this approach — in fact, for many players, the simplicity is a strength , mak...

Why the Soundtrack Is the Best Part of Trials of Mana

Support me at BuyMeACoffee (link below) RPG Odyssey      When people talk about Trials of Mana , they often focus on its colorful visuals, party system, or real-time combat. While all of these are important, I believe the true soul of the game lies in its outstanding soundtrack , composed by the legendary Hiroki Kikuta. Simply put: the music is Trials of Mana’s greatest strength, and it’s what elevates the entire experience from good to unforgettable. A Soundscape That Brings the World to Life      The world of Trials of Mana is full of diverse environments — lush forests, scorching deserts, frozen peaks, and magical cities. Each place has its own unique atmosphere, and what ties it all together is Kikuta’s music. The soundtrack doesn’t just accompany your journey; it defines it.      Every track feels perfectly crafted to match the tone of the moment, whether it’s a peaceful village stroll, a tense dungeon crawl,...

Trials of Mana (2020) Review – A Simple Yet Charming JRPG Adventure

Support me at BuyMeACoffee (link below) RPG Odyssey 1. Story and Plot Narrative:      The story in Trials of Mana (2020 remake) is fine overall — simple, but still engaging enough to keep me interested throughout the adventure. I played with Reisz as my main character, Angela as my second, and Charlotte as my third choice.      The main storyline is straightforward and easy to follow, though it doesn't reach the level of complexity you might expect from some modern RPGs. My main issue with the story comes from the inciting incident: who thought it was a good idea to entrust the key to the crystal — which protects an entire kingdom — to a child? (This being Reisz’s brother, Elliot.) I understand that they needed a catalyst to set Reisz off on her journey, but this decision felt poorly written and undermined the believability of the opening.      That said, once the story gets moving, it manages to stay engaging, with enough momentum ...
