Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition S Review

Spoilers Ahead.

1. Story and Plot

Narrative: The story of Dragon Quest XI revolves around a protagonist marked as the reincarnation of a legendary hero destined to vanquish evil. Throughout the journey, the hero meets a diverse cast of allies who aid in this mission. The narrative is engaging, weaving themes of heroism, destiny, and camaraderie. The inclusion of time travel adds depth and intrigue, even if it resets certain impactful moments, such as Serena’s growth following Veronica’s death.

Characters: Character development is mild, with most characters staying consistent throughout the journey. Serena’s arc stands out due to her transformation after Veronica’s death, though this is undone by the time travel plotline. While this may frustrate some, it adds a bittersweet complexity to the story. Despite limited growth, the cast remains memorable and likable.

World-Building: The game’s world is rich and diverse, featuring maps and cities inspired by real-world cultures. Notable examples include Puerto Valor, reminiscent of Spain, and Gondolia, inspired by Italy. The lore is well-crafted, drawing on the deeds of past heroes to enrich the setting and create a sense of history.

2. Gameplay

Mechanics: The gameplay is one of the game’s greatest strengths. Though not innovative, its classic turn-based combat feels refreshing in 2024 (2024 is the year I played the game, the game released in 2019), especially amidst the trend of action-oriented RPGs. The mechanics are straightforward yet satisfying, catering to fans of traditional RPGs.

Combat System: The combat system is simple and effective, reminiscent of earlier Final Fantasy titles. Players command characters with learned skills and can utilize the “pep up” mode, akin to Final Fantasy IX’s Trance system. It’s accessible and enjoyable, if not groundbreaking.

Exploration: Exploration strikes a balance between openness and linearity. While much of it revolves around gathering crafting materials, the game avoids being overwhelming. The maps encourage discovery without feeling burdensome.

Quests and Side Activities: Side quests are present but not particularly rewarding, as they don’t grant experience points. This led me to prioritize the main story after completing a few early quests. While functional, they lack the depth to make them compelling.

3. Graphics and Art Design

Visual Style: The visuals are pleasing, though not revolutionary. Akira Toriyama’s character designs are iconic and timeless, bringing a sense of nostalgia and charm to the game. The environments are vibrant and detailed, with Heliodor being particularly striking.

Technical Quality: The game runs smoothly with no noticeable graphical glitches, though I did encounter a crash during the Sniflheim section. Whether this was due to the game or the Switch hardware remains unclear.

Character and Environment Design: Characters are consistent with Toriyama’s signature style, and the environments complement the game’s fantasy theme. Each location feels unique and thoughtfully designed, contributing to the immersive experience.

4. Sound and Music

Soundtrack: The music, performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, is exceptional. It’s both memorable and fitting, enhancing the emotional and adventurous aspects of the game.

Voice Acting: The Japanese voice acting is outstanding, with standout performances like Maaya Uchida as Veronica. While the English voice acting is serviceable, the Japanese cast elevates the characters’ personalities. However, the silent protagonist feels out of place, as the lack of voice acting for the main character detracts from immersion.

Sound Effects: Sound effects are well-executed, enhancing the fantasy setting with believable audio for magical and combat scenarios.

5. User Interface and Controls

UI Design: The UI is functional and intuitive, though I occasionally opened the wrong menu when navigating. This is a minor issue that doesn’t detract significantly from the experience.

Controls: Controls are responsive and easy to use, particularly in the overworld, where players can initiate preemptive strikes on enemies.

6. Replayability and Content

Game Length: With over 97 hours invested and still not strong enough to defeat the final boss, the game offers substantial content. A friend reported completing it in 120 hours, indicating a lengthy and worthwhile adventure.

Replay Value: The game offers some replayability through character skill trees and party formation options. Experimenting with different builds and strategies can provide a fresh experience.

Post-Launch Content: There is no post-launch content or DLC, but the base game’s content is extensive.

7. Performance and Technical Aspects

Performance: The game runs smoothly on the Switch, with only one crash encountered. Otherwise, performance is stable.

Bugs and Glitches: Apart from the single crash, there were no noticeable technical issues.

8. Originality and Innovation

Innovation: While the game doesn’t introduce groundbreaking features, its classic turn-based combat and charming presentation make it a standout for fans of traditional RPGs.

Comparison: The ability to swap party members mid-combat, similar to Final Fantasy X, is a welcome feature, though it’s implemented more effectively in Final Fantasy X. Overall, Dragon Quest XI delivers a polished experience without venturing into uncharted territory.

9. Overall Enjoyment

Personal Experience: Despite its standard approach, Dragon Quest XI was thoroughly enjoyable. As my first experience with the series, it left a strong impression, and I’m eager to explore other entries in the franchise.

Target Audience: The game is ideal for fans of turn-based RPGs, those who appreciate a good story, and players seeking a challenging yet rewarding adventure.

Final Thoughts: Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition S is a love letter to traditional RPGs. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, its engaging story, charming characters, and polished gameplay make it a must-play for fans of the genre.
