Final Fantasy Best Characters (This is My opinion)
While I’m still working on my review of Final Fantasy VII Remake (and unfortunately didn’t finish the game before my deadline), I wanted to share something different this week: my list of favorite Final Fantasy characters. This list includes characters from Final Fantasy IV through Final Fantasy XVI (excluding Final Fantasy XI unfortunately I didn’t play this game) and is ordered by the release dates of the games, not by ranking the characters themselves. Each character was chosen based on their personality and story arc—how they developed throughout their respective game and the impact they had on me. This list is not influenced by their combat abilities or in-game skills. Spoilers ahead so keep that in mind, please.
Final Fantasy IV: Rydia
Rydia’s journey in Final Fantasy IV is one of the most profound character transformations in the series. She begins as a young, frightened girl, traumatized by the death of her mother—a tragedy inadvertently caused by the protagonist. Despite her fear and anger, Rydia evolves into a strong and determined young woman, mastering the art of summoning magic. Her growth from a scared child to a powerful summoner symbolizes resilience and the ability to overcome even the darkest moments. Rydia’s character arc is a testament to the strength that can be found in vulnerability.
Final Fantasy V: Galuf
Final Fantasy VI: Celes
Celes is a character who embodies strength and resilience in Final Fantasy VI. As a former general of the Empire, she starts off as a warrior with a strong sense of duty, but her journey takes her through profound emotional and moral conflicts. One of the most memorable moments in the game, and perhaps what makes her so unforgettable, is the opera scene, where Celes shows a side of vulnerability and humanity rarely seen in characters of that era. Despite the odds, she emerges as a leader and a symbol of hope, especially in the latter half of the game when the world is plunged into ruin. Celes stands out for her complexity, her strength in the face of despair, and her role in uniting the party when all seems lost.
Final Fantasy VII: Cloud
Cloud Strife is one of the most iconic characters in the Final Fantasy series, and his journey is as complex as it is compelling. At the beginning of Final Fantasy VII, Cloud presents himself with a tough, detached exterior, seemingly indifferent to the world around him. However, this facade begins to crack as he grows closer to Aerith, revealing a more vulnerable and caring side. The revelation that Sephiroth, thought to be dead, is alive triggers a profound transformation in Cloud, driving him to confront his past. The tragedy of Aerith’s death is a turning point that further deepens his character, showing his capacity for grief and his resolve to continue the fight in her memory. The discovery that Cloud suffers from dissociative identity disorder, with his memories entangled with those of his fallen comrade Zack, adds another layer to his story, illustrating how trauma can shape and distort one’s sense of self. Cloud’s journey from a fractured and confused individual to someone who reclaims his true identity is what makes him a standout character in the series.Final Fantasy VIII: Rinoa
Final Fantasy IX: Vivi
Final Fantasy X: Rikku
Rikku is a character who brings energy, optimism, and a touch of mischief to Final Fantasy X. As a member of the Al Bhed, she adds a unique perspective to the group, often challenging the more rigid beliefs of the other characters. Her playful and upbeat nature is infectious, providing much-needed levity during the darker moments of the game. However, Rikku is more than just comic relief—she’s a skilled fighter and resourceful in battle, using her knowledge of machinery and alchemy to support the team. Her deep love for her family and her determination to protect Yuna, despite the risks involved, show her inner strength and loyalty. Rikku’s mix of playfulness, compassion, and ingenuity makes her a standout character, one who leaves a lasting impression long after the game is over.
Final Fantasy XII: Basch
In a game with a diverse cast of characters, Basch stands out in Final Fantasy XII for his unwavering sense of honor and duty. While other characters like Vaan and Penelo might not contribute as much to the overarching story, and Ashe's stiff demeanor can make her hard to connect with, Basch brings a grounded and mature presence to the group. Wrongfully accused of a crime he didn’t commit, Basch's journey is one of redemption and loyalty. He is a character who, despite his circumstances, never loses sight of his principles. While Fran and Balthier often steal the spotlight with their banter, Basch remains a steady, reliable figure in the narrative, embodying the traits of a true knight. His resolve and sense of justice make him a character you can respect, even if he isn’t the most flamboyant or outwardly charming.
Final Fantasy XIII: Vanille
Final Fantasy XIV: Y'shtola
Y'shtola Rhul is a character who exudes wisdom, strength, and a calm, collected demeanor that commands respect. Even though it’s been a while since I last played Final Fantasy XIV, Y'shtola’s presence in the game left a lasting impression. As a skilled healer and a powerful sorceress, she plays a crucial role in the story, often serving as the voice of reason and guiding the player through some of the most challenging moments. Her sharp intellect and unwavering resolve make her a pillar of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Despite the trials she faces, Y'shtola remains composed and focused, embodying a sense of grace under pressure. Her quiet confidence and formidable magical abilities make her one of the most memorable and "awesome" characters in the series.
Final Fantasy XV: (No Favorite)
Final Fantasy XV is a unique entry in the series for
me, mainly because it’s the one game where I didn’t find myself connecting with
any of the characters. While the game’s world and story had potential, the
characters just didn’t resonate with me. Whether it was the group dynamic that
felt forced or the individual personalities that seemed underdeveloped, I
struggled to find a character that I could genuinely care about. This lack of
connection made it difficult to fully immerse myself in the game, and as a
result, Final Fantasy XV stands out as an outlier in my
experience with the series. While I can appreciate the effort that went into
creating these characters, none of them managed to leave a lasting impression
on me.
Final Fantasy XVI: Cid
Cid from Final Fantasy XVI isn’t just the standout character in this game; he’s possibly the best Cid in the entire series. What makes him truly exceptional is the way he effortlessly blends wisdom with humor and wit. Cid imparts his knowledge and guidance in a way that’s both entertaining and insightful, never coming off as preachy but always leaving a lasting impact. His sharp wit and clever remarks bring a refreshing levity to even the most serious situations, making him a character you can’t help but love. Cid’s ability to be both a mentor and a friend, all while keeping a lighthearted demeanor, is what makes him not only the best character in Final Fantasy XVI but one of the best Cids in the series’ long history.
